Why Most Financial Advisers Are Not Equipped for Expat Clients
It is a mistake that happens constantly. Someone moving abroad asks their existing financial adviser for guidance — and receives advice that is technically sound for a UK resident but entirely wrong for someone relocating internationally.
This is not because the adviser is incompetent. It is because international financial planning is a genuinely specialist area, and most advisers simply do not have the training, experience, or regulatory permissions to operate across borders.
What makes expat financial advice different?
1. Cross-border tax rules Domestic advisers understand UK tax law. Expat advisers understand how UK tax law interacts with the tax law of another country — and specifically, how double taxation treaties work. This is a completely different skill set.
2. Regulatory permissions An adviser regulated by the FCA can give advice to UK residents. To give advice to someone living in the UAE, Spain, or Australia, they typically need additional regulatory authorisation in that jurisdiction. Many domestic advisers lack this.
3. Pension expertise Pension transfers for expats — particularly QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes) — are a regulated and complex area. An adviser without specific QROPS knowledge should not be advising on pension transfers for people moving abroad.
4. Currency and international investment knowledge Investing when you earn, spend, and are taxed in different currencies requires a different approach to standard UK investment planning.
What to look for in an expat financial adviser
- Regulatory authorisation in your destination country (or at least demonstrated experience advising clients there) - Specific experience with cross-border tax planning - Knowledge of pension options for non-residents - Access to international investment platforms - Transparent fee structure
How Link Independent helps
This is precisely the gap that Link Independent was created to fill. We match clients with advisers who have genuine, demonstrable expertise in international financial planning — not generalists who will figure it out as they go. Every adviser in our network is regulated, experienced, and properly qualified for the work they do.
